Chelsea target Alvaro Morata wants to leave Real Madrid

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has revealed that Alvaro Morata was "really close" to joining him at Old Trafford this summer.

Jose Mourinho instead turned this attention to Romelu Lukaku and signed the Everton star for £75m.

De Gea, meanwhile, was on the verge of making the opposite move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2015 before the transfer collapsed on deadline day after paperwork failed to arrive at La Liga headquarters in time.

Griezmann was their No1 target going into the transfer window but Atleti's transfer ban ultimately saw him sign a new contract and stay.

Mourinho confirmed United's interest in Morata on Friday when he acknowledged that negotiations with Madrid had broken down.

The club feels the young player has the potential to be even better than De Gea in the future. "It is a pity he is not with us, but he is a top striker and will be a success wherever he is".

"Morata is a Real Madrid player". It is obvious, it is public and we have not reached an economic agreement. "I don't think he can end with us", Mourinho added.

"There's no truth to Barcelona because I'm very happy at United".

Mourinho suggested Lukaku's Premier League experience and his personal relationship with the player from their time together at Chelsea were the primary reasons United sought to buy the Belgium worldwide, the club also having been strongly linked with a deal for Antoine Griezmann before Atletico Madrid's transfer ban nixed the Frenchman's exit.

"He's intelligent, he's polite, we kept the contact, the feeling and now we are back together in different moments and I have no doubts it is going to work".
