And yet there was no trailer, just a rough cut of scenes and still images, accompanied by the Disney orchestra performing live, playing music from the new film's soundtrack.

Walt Disney Pictures has released a new motion poster for Mary Poppins Returns.

The teaser of the film was released recently and much like Mary Poppins says, Emily Blunt looks "practically ideal from head to toe". In the story, Michael (Whishaw) and Jane (Mortimer) are now grown up, with Michael, his three children and their housekeeper, Ellen (Walters), living on Cherry Tree Lane.

It is then that Emily Blunt's Mary Poppins returns to their lives, and from there the adventures begin, with supporting cast and characters including Lamplighter Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda); Topsy, Mary's cousin (Meryl Streep); and Hollywood greats Angela Lansbury as a balloon seller, and Dick van Dyke returning as the bank chairman. "We both and the entire company and the creative time feel very protective of the original film because we love it so much", Marshall said.

"I needed to try to pay homage to [original Mary Poppins star] Julie Andrews, but carve out a new space for myself", said Blunt of trying to make the character her own. I think she is a little more sort of acerbic and odd and vain and weird in the books.

Marshall revealed that he was unaware that Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers had penned seven other novels featuring the character until he was approached about this movie.

The movie is set to reunite the director and producing team behind Disney's hit musical Into the Woods, with Rob Marshall in the director's chair and Marshall, John DeLuca, and Marc Platt all down as producers. "This is a brand new original film musical from top to bottom, which is very rare, and it is a wonderful opportunity to create something specifically for the screen", Rob added.

Directed by Rob Marshall, with songs from the duo of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray), Mary Poppins Returns will premiere on December 25, 2018.
