The result saw Bird become the second driver in Formula E history to complete a weekend double (the first being Nicolas Prost, London 2016), as well as capping off a ideal weekend for DS Virgin, the team leaving NY with two poles and two wins.

I am delighted to secure our second double podium result of the season in this inaugural New York City ePrix weekend, - said team principal Dilbagh Gill.

Rosenqvist had been second in the group stages and was fully committed on his lap, but the Mahindra star fell just short of snatching the top spot.

He stayed glued to the Swede's rear bumper, and after a brief full-course yellow interlude thanks to Mitch Evans stopping his Jaguar while running 10th, resumed his attack immediately. Unfortunately Bird took the lead back after the 10th lap of the race.

On Saturday, Bird became the first driver to ever win an global motor race within the five boroughs, battling his way past rookie teammate Alex Lynn and holding off fan favorite Jean-Eric Vergne of Techeetah.

Rosenqvist's teammate Nick Heidfeld tried to make a move but failed to do so.

Jean-Eric Vergne will line up third alongside Renault e.dams rookie Pierre Gasly, who made a mistake on his hotlap. Venturi driver Tom Dillmann was seventh leading Techeetah's Jean-Eric Vergne who was forced to make an early stop after incurring damage on his vehicle. He did make it across the finish line though, in fourth place. Lucas di Grassi, driving for ABT Schaeffler finished in the fifth position.

Further down the grid it was disappointment for Bird's team mate Alex Lynn, who was unable to show the speed that he managed to get pole for yesterday's race. "Hats off to DS Virgin Racing for giving what was the best auto they've ever given me".
