Big 12 commissioner: Adding title game not about money

Bob Bowlsby took time during his state of the Big 12 Conference address to recognize former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops on Monday morning.

"It is obviously a very complex situation, and because of the lawsuits, it is - it will have some effect on the time frame of our verification process, but we are moving forward with it", Bowlsby said at Big 12 media day. "As much as we'll miss him on the field, we'll miss him in the meeting room where he also was very thoughtful and very impactful".

The Big 12 is also breaking in three brand new head coaches in Matt Rhule, Tom Herman, and Lincoln Riley. The Sooners were part of the CFP in 2015, the only Big 12 team so far to make it in the current "final four" format.

"The number of platforms, the number of distribution mechanisms - the one thing I will tell you, and this I believe, is that the best reality TV available is live sports", he said. "And I know that the method by which we conduct our championships and conduct our regular season is the most hard".

Bowlsby arrived as the Big 12 was coming out of realignment, losing original members Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado and Texas A&M to other conferences and gaining West Virginia and TCU. And the league produced only 14 NFL draft picks in April, its lowest total since the 1996 inception of the conference. Bowlsby does not expect the investigation to conclude before the season begins. "Looks like it might be through 2024-25". The board has been very good to me.

"They are working very hard to get it right".

"We're here to talk about football, and we didn't make the College Football Playoff", Bowlsby said.

"It's not a coincidence", Bowlsby said.

"The finances of it were - I don't ever recall them being discussed". They are singing off the same sheet music.

"I feel I'm a pretty young 65", he said. "I plan on being here awhile".

It was Bowlsby's turn on Monday.

Pivoting back to that shiny new 13 data point, Bowlsby said the decision to revive the Big 12 title game was "made 100 percent on our ability to optimize the likelihood of getting a team into the CFP".

"I think our perception is somewhat a product of not being in the playoff two of the three years".

The commissioner noted "it gets a little tiresome" dealing with perception of the league taking a backseat to the SEC, ACC and Big Ten.

With the conference revenue seeing record numbers, perhaps it's no surprise that the league is looking to lock up Bowlsby for the future - that may include the renegotiating of the Big 12's television rights. "It's good for the sports, and gives our schools better competition - and maybe it helps save a sport", Bowlsby said. It's about winning National Championships.
