SEC, SEC: Tigers, Gators set to play for national title

"Just like SEC weekend, just more at stake", Tigers' senior shortstop Kramer Robertson said. But they'll welcome back lefthander Luke Heimlich, Jake Mulholland, Brandon Eisert, Grant Gambrell and Bryce Fehmel, among others. Papierski launched a three-run homer to right in the bottom of the second to give LSU a 3-0 lead. Typically, the prevailing south wind this time of year makes it hard to get the ball out of the park, but winds from the north and west the past week have made the home run a factor.

The top three all-time teams - 1972 Arizona State (64-6, .914), 1982 Texas (59-6, .908) and 1974 Arizona (58-6, .906) - all fell short of a championship. Jordan then hammered a high pitch for a double down the leftfield line. Christian Hicks gave Florida a 2-0 lead on a double that scored Rivera. Sophomore right-handers Brady Singer (3.18 ERA) and Jackson Kowar (4.15 ERA) round out the starting rotation.

Austin Langworthy doubled and scored on a groundout in the second inning, Hicks doubled in a run in the fifth, and he scored in the seventh when he tripled and came home on Deacon Liput's grounder that deflected off first base. It appeared that the stars were aligning for OSU as they came from behind to beat Cal State Fullerton in game one, and smashed LSU in game two. The Gators lost one game each in regional play (Bethune-Cookman), in a home Super Regional (Wake Forest) and here three nights ago when TCU barreled to a 9-2 victory.

Gilbert was even more effective than Lange in handing Oregon State a second straight defeat.

The Gators had - and continue to have - difficulty producing runs. Gator runs in the second, fifth and seventh innings gave Florida and Faedo enough of a cushion to end TCU's 2017 campaign. Gilbert retired the first 11 batters he faced. He has 11 home runs on the year.

A laundry list of things were checked off during the opening week of this year's College World Series. "I put some good swings on some fastballs today, but that wasn't the highlight of the game". So both teams are here for a reason, and it's going to be who goes out there and gets the job done. "We have to grind out every single at bat and they're going to have to make quality pitches". "I had to get Cam out. But that doesn't take away from how outstanding he was". Papierski and Jordan combined for five of LSU's six RBIs. It averaged three runs per game as it was swept by Auburn.

Papierski became the first player to homer twice in a CWS game since TCU's Bryan Holaday in 2010. Janczak, who struggled against the Gators last Sunday, struck out seven, walked none and scattered seven hits in seven innings.

Remember a year ago when powerhouses such as LSU, Texas A&M, Mississippi State and Louisville didn't even get to play at TD Ameritrade Park? Steven Kwan opened the frame with a single past Cole Freeman, marking the first hit Hess has allowed in the CWS.

After his Tigers had beaten Oregon State, 6-1, earlier in the day to secure a spot in the College World Series finals, he hoped the Gators would do the same. The Tigers will open the best-of-three finals Monday against the victor of the Florida-TCU game Saturday night.

Coach Paul Mainieri's comments: "It was unbelievable what Caleb Gilbert did".

“I thought our starting pitching was going to be as good as anybodys in the country.

Skoug was 2 for 13 in the CWS when he came up in the sixth inning with two outs and the bases loaded.

"I took it on, on practice day", says Papierski. But we both played great defense. How about a deeper dive into the history books, and you can find multiple teams with incredible records who failed to win the national title.

The lone player who will have to make a decision on whether or not to return to school is Gretler who was drafted in the 39th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates. The whole team played well.

They had to defeat an Oregon State team that had the most formidable record of any team in four decades, and they had to do it twice.
