The bullet entered his left hip and tore through his pelvis, breaking bones, injuring organs and causing severe bleeding. And he says Scalise is "in some trouble". Politico reported Thursday that a lobbyist for Tyson Foods who was also shot Wednesday, Matt Mika, remains in critical condition and will require additional surgeries, his family said Thursday.

"What a great job they did", Trump said over thunderous cheers and applause.

LSU officials say the university sent t-shirts, hats, towels, and other items for congressional members to wear for the game to show support for Scalise.

"We love you", congressman John Lewis, representing Georgia, said of Mr Scalise's critical condition. However, one person was not at the game: President Donald Trump.

"A lot of times in politics we have divisions but it shouldn't come to violence", he said.

Announcing the rollback of President Barack Obama's diplomatic opening during a speech in Miami, Trump said Cuba had secured far too many concessions from the the "misguided" deal but "now those days are over".

Five people were injured, including Scalise.

Since then, the lawmaker has undergone multiple surgeries and procedures to stop the bleeding and fix bone.

Cheered by Cuba hardliners in both parties, Trump's new policy is broadly opposed by US businesses eager to invest in Cuba. "Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of [Capitol police agents] Crystal Griner and David Bailey who saved everyone's lives at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's".

The first update from the hospital came late Wednesday, indicating Scalise had undergone an initial surgery and a second procedure, in addition to receiving "multiple units of blood transfusion".

The Louisiana Republican was shot in the hip Wednesday morning in the baseball practice shooting by an IL man with grudges against President Donald Trump and the GOP. The offices of both senators - Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth - turned over the emails to Capitol Police and declined to offer specifics about their content.

On Capitol Hill on Thursday, members of Congress tried to remain optimistic about Scalise's condition.

Numerous players in the congressional game Thursday night are wearing Louisiana State University hats in honor of Scalise, a graduate of the school, as they assemble at Nationals Park in Washington.

Before they took the field, Democrats and Republicans gathered in prayer around second base as fans chanted "USA, USA".

Although the weather in Washington looks headed toward a near-flawless summer night, an obvious and immovable shadow is being cast over Thursday night's Congressional Baseball Game - a tradition that began more than a century ago.

"The Congressional Baseball Game has never been about Republicans against Democrats", said Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., in an opinion piece he wrote for CNN before the game.

The crowd chanted "USA!"

Seeing his friend and colleague Steve Scalise motionless on the ground.

Even so, a poignant and immovable shadow cast itself over Thursday's annual congressional baseball game.

Trump spoke during a White House event devoted to what aides called "Apprenticeship and Workforce of Tomorrow initiatives". "America doesn't give out, America doesn't give in... if we don't play this baseball game and we go home, then they win", Williams said.
