That exchange shut down I-24, causing a backup that extended for ten miles.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said on Twitter that they had been captured and the state's governor indicated that they had been detained in the neighbouring state of Tennessee.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director Mark Gwyn, center, speaks during a news conference held at a truck stop Thursday, June 15, 2017, in Christiana, Tenn.

The head of Georgia's Department of Correction, Greg Dozier, declined to talk about how the prisoners where capable of overtaking the armed guards on Thursday.

A photo of the two suspects after their capture was quickly shared by law enforcement and news agencies across the country. They were not hurt in the pursuit with police and will be extradited back to Georgia in the near future. The couple were eventually able to report the crime shortly after their captors left, he added.

The two inmates that authorities say escaped a Georgia corrections bus after killing two guards were captured Thursday night in Christiana, Tenn., after an intense three-day manhunt and high-speed police chase.

At the time of the crash, the escapees were being pursued by Rutherford County deputies. "How they got through the locks and things up to that area I do not know", he said.

The men initially wanted to make the elderly woman drive as their hostage, but when her vehicle failed to start they stole the couple's Jeep instead.

The two were being held at the Rutherford County jail.

The escapees stayed inside the Shelbyville home for nearly three hours before fleeing.

Authorities say they have captured two escaped inmates wanted in the slayings of two Georgia prison guards.

Two Georgia fugitives Donnie Rowe, top, and Ricky Dubose, bottom, were arrested in Tennessee.

The two escapees are believed to have been in this area, because Donnie Russell Rowe is from Lewisburg.

Over the next two days, there were several reported sightings, from a Family Dollar in Madison (that was later confirmed to be true) to a rest stop in SC (that turned out not to be them), but no concrete idea of where they were - or where they might be headed.

"The homeowner did come out, he requested a neighbor who lived just over the way from him to come over and assist and together they did secure these two suspects until the Rutherford County Sheriffs were able to come and apprehend them", said THP Lieutenant Bill Miller. "I am grateful to everybody and thankful to God himself for minimizing any further harm to anyone". It's an ideal situation in the end.

The fugitives tied the couple up, putting socks on the man's hands so he couldn't loosen his bonds, Swing said.

Kate Brumback reported from Madison and Atlanta.

The two inmates overpowered and disarmed the guards on a bus about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday as 33 inmates were being driven between prisons, authorities have said. The two men crashed, fled, and tried to steal another auto from a driveway.

The deceased officers were identified as Sgt. Curtis Billue and Sgt. Christopher Monica.

One inmate, Donnie Russel Rowe, is serving life without parole for armed robbery. He also was convicted of theft and identity fraud in cases from August, 2010. It is unclear at this time whether specifically Rowe or Dubose shot and killed the two correctional officers.
