As there's a number of top defensemen exposed such as Anaheim's Sami Vatanen and Ottawa's Marc Methot.

McPhee plans to finalize the Golden Knights roster Tuesday night, check with the National Hockey League to make sure everythings good to go, sleep on it and submit it Wednesday morning before the deadline. There are a lot of good players there.”. The Las Vegas Golden Knights will announce their selections during the NHL Awards ceremony, which is 8 p.m. Wednesday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

An NHL roster freeze is in effect until Thursday unless a team is dealing with Vegas, and McPhee put forth an ominous statement shortly after the lists were published Sunday morning. A 30-goal guy on a one-year, $750,000 deal, there's no team in the league that wouldn't want him.

Jonathan Marchessault is a big-name youngster available to the Golden Knights.

"That's really one of the things we wanted to leverage", Treliving said. The Penguins instead protected Matt Murray a week after the second-year goalie led them to win their second consecutive championship.

Vatanen was the odd-man out in being left unprotected from a deep and talented group of Ducks defensemen.

The Predators were put in a bind in when exposing Neal, a 10-time 20-goal-scorer, because they elected to protect a fourth defenseman.

Eric Staal of the Minnesota Wild, former Manchester Monarch Dustin Brown of the Los Angeles Kings, Carolina goalie Cam Ward and former UNH star Trevor Van Riemsdyk of the Chicago Blackhawks were among the other players left unprotected.

There's also a wealth of proven goaltenders available given that teams were required to expose at least one. And every move has its price ahead of Wednesday night's official announcement of the Vegas roster. Among the standouts are Washington Capitals right wing T.J. Oshie and defenceman Kevin Shattenkirk, Canadiens right wing Alex Radulov and aging San Jose Sharks forwards Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau and 45-year-old Florida Panthers winger Jaromir Jagr Should they test the market, all could be signing with new clubs before the Canada Day fireworks head skyward that evening. It's possible, even, that the Penguins have a side deal in place sending some sort of asset to the Golden Knights to ensure they take Fleury, rather than one of the other available players.

"People have identified people on other clubs they'd like to have", McPhee said.

McPhee revealed on the weekend that he was willing to let teams keep players they exposed for a price (likely a bevy of prospects and/or draft picks), but told National Hockey League teams that Monday would be the last day that he would complete a trade to protect their players.

Ian Cole (Pittsburgh) - A part of the Penguins no-name defense, the 28-year-old Cole will likely be passed by when Vegas selecting goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, but a two-time Stanley Cup victor could bring quite a hefty return if the Golden Knights go a different direction. We do know that the Golden Knights at least won't be starting the season with a bunch of players who are trying to prove that everyone was wrong about them.

The NHL salary cap will be $75 million per club for the 2017-18 season, with a salary floor of $55.4 million. Any pending free agent signed would count as Vegas' expansion-draft selection from that player's team.

There are some pretty good players on the unprotected list, including three-time Stanley Cup winning goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, as well as fellow netminders Roberto Luongo and Peter Mrazek.
