Trump again acknowledges he's under investigation

Trump, who hired his own lawyer last month to represent him regarding probes by the special counsel and congressional committees, continued his harsh criticism of the investigations in series of tweets on Friday.

President Donald Trump on Friday seemingly confirmed that he's the subject of an obstruction probe, tweeting that it's a "witch hunt" - aimed at Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein - for an investigation over his decision to terminate former FBI Director James Comey.

But Sekulow said that Trump was reacting to a Washington Post story that said special counsel Robert Mueller was examining whether Trump had tried to obstruct the probe by firing Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey in May.

Also, it was Rosenstein who appointed Robert S. Mueller III as the special counsel to lead that investigation after Comey was sacked. But Comey has testified under oath that in a private meeting, Trump raised the investigation of fired national security adviser Michael Flynn - part of the larger Russian Federation probe - and said, "I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go".

Barak Cohen, a former Justice Department lawyer and now a defense attorney specializing in white-collar crime and investigations, said there was no requirement that the special counsel notify Trump he was under investigation, so the lack of such notice meant nothing.

Yet Trump's angry tweets on Friday underscored the near-impossible challenge his advisers and legal team have in trying to get him to avoid weighing in on an active probe. While the Trump administration initially said that letter was the reason the president fired Comey on May 9, Trump later said he did so because of the "Russia thing".

He also claimed that the person investigating him advised him to fire Comey, though it's unclear whom he was referring to.

When President Barack Obama entered office, Rosenstein was asked to stay on and served for all eight years of the president's term.

Starr also touched on some people's frustrations following Attorney General Jeff Sessions' recent testimony - and his refusal to repeat conversations with Trump - in front of the Senate intelligence committee on Tuesday.

Hours later, a source close to Trump's outside legal team said Trump did not intend his tweet to be confirmation of the investigation but rather was reacting to a Washington Post story on Wednesday about the probe.

Democrats challenged Rosenstein on whether he would appoint a special prosecutor to look into Russia's election meddling.

Trump has been doing nothing but watching TIVO'd cable news coverage, aides said, and griping about the probe.

And then: "You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"

Rosenstein told a closed session of Congress last month that he learned Comey would be dismissed one day before penning his memo.

"In the twilight of the Bush administration, we don't need an acting USA attorney in Maryland", Mikulski said at the time. He has already been subpoenaed by the House intelligence committee.

INSKEEP: The Department of Justice is so determined ordinarily not to comment on ongoing investigations that even putting out a statement saying news accounts may be wrong or not sounds like a comment, actually.
