"Alexandre Lacazette was told he could leave, so we had negotiations with Atletico", Aulas said at a press conference, which unveiled new signing Fernando Marcal on Friday. The Red Devils have joined Premier League rivals, Arsenal in the race to sign the Lyon striker in the summer transfer window.

After finishing the 2016-17 campaign outside of the top four and coupled with doubts over the futures of important first-team players, Wenger is reportedly ready to revamp his attack ahead of the new season, with Lacazette at the heart of those plans.

Lacazette has bagged a very impressive 129 goals in 275 appearances in total for Lyon after making his debut in 2010 against Auxerre aged 19.

Arsenal and Atletico Madrid have both been linked with Lacazette in recent months, but Aulas has revealed that a move to Diego Simeone's side is off the cards after the Rojiblancos' transfer ban.

It won't be easy for Arsene Wenger to replace the Chilean created last but one of his compatriots might be able to fill the gap somewhat. Mourinho, though, is keeping his options open should he fail to land the Real Madrid striker and he has, thus, set his sights on Lacazette. However, Manchester United might hold the aces in Lacazette's pursuit as they can offer him Champions League football.

The France worldwide came up through Lyon's academy and has had an impressive hit rate of 129 goals in his 275 appearances for the club, and like other players of his calibre may be unwilling to spend a season without Champions League football to contend with.

According to French publication L'Equipe*, Liverpool are "focused on signing Lacazette".
