Ellen was reported missing on Friday after she had failed to return home from Winstanley College, where she studied.

Greater Manchester Police are investigating an Orrell Water Park murder and have arrested a 47-year-old man for questioning.

Her body was found in local beauty spot Orrell Water Park.

Detective Superintendent Howard Millington, from GMP's Major Incident Team, said: "This is an absolute tragedy; my thoughts are with Ellen's family and friends.

We have a full investigation team working on finding out what exactly happened to her and to try and find the person who did this".

"This is very much an ongoing investigation".

Ellen's friends said she had last been near the reservoirs in Wigan. Our specially trained officers are with her family and will continue to support them through this hard time.

A murder investigation has been launched after a woman was found dead in Orrell Water Park in Wigan. Their support and the information we have been given has been vital in this investigation.

Formal identification has yet to be established and police said they are keeping an "open mind" at this stage. "If you have any concerns, please speak to our officers", Millington said. "R.I.P. Ellen".

Her father, Mike Higginbottom, told reporters that his daughter had dreamed of becoming a doctor.

She had pleaded on the internet for people to help find Ellen, saying: "Her phone is going to voicemail and all her friends and family are extremely anxious". Someone out there knows who did this, or they know it was them, and we will not stop until we find them and bring them to justice.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 7103, alternatively call 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
