Lead Surgeon: US Congressman Scalise Showing Improvement After Being Shot

In today's political climate, that's something worth celebrating. But there's little sign that it will.

After Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., was shot in 2011, we urged readers not to blame anyone but Jared Loughner, her deranged attacker, while deploring incendiary political rhetoric. Both had appeared on the House floor earlier.

Sen. Marco Rubio, who claims credit for writing the Trump policy along with a fellow Cuban-American and Florida Republican, Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, tweeted Friday that individual American travelers will still be able to go to Cuba for the objective of supporting the Cuban people, a category that includes helping human rights organizations and non-governmental groups meant to strengthen democracy and civil society. Trump tweeted Friday while en route to Miami.

It's become a familiar pattern for lawmakers after a tragedy.

By restricting individual U.S.travel to Cuba, the new policy also risks cutting off a major source of income for Cuba's private business sector, which the policy is meant to support. Except, the President DID see the Congressman. He has required surgery several times since the shooting. John Kennedy, R-Louisiana, couldn't be happier to hear that news. Even before the shooting, GOP lawmakers had been anxious about angry town halls and some physical threats from people upset over Trump and the GOP's healthcare bill.

The entire stadium came together to honor Scalise and the Capital Police officers present who prevented the shooting from being much worse.

"The media's constant barrage of personal attacks can incite someone to take irrational actions", Smith said.

President Trump delivered brief remarks before the game calling for unity and noting that the entire nation was praying for Scalise. It was a frightful tragedy and I hope the victims come out fine.

Trump, he said, has fed the partisan divisions. Then, top leaders of the House and Senate - Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer - joined other lawmakers on the field to yell "Play Ball" to the crowd.

"On behalf of Steve and our children, I want to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for the incredible amount of prayers and warm wishes we have received since Wednesday's events", Scalise's wife, Jennifer, said in a statement Friday.

Lawmakers agree that there are some steps they can all take to help tamp down the partisan flames.

Rep. Dwight Evans, a Democrat, and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, a Republican, represent districts in Pennsylvania. "So I don't do it", Nolan said.

As he walked around the Capitol on crutches, Williams suggested members of both parties should try using more affirmative arguments instead of always blasting the other side. "I know you all will be playing extra hard tonight for Steve", Trump said.

"It's been a lot of the attitude".

"This is a limitation on what we did, not a reversal of what we did", Rhodes said in an interview.

Matt Golin, who lives about a half mile from where the shooting happened in Alexandria, chose to come to his first congressional baseball game after hearing about the tragedy. They sat next to each other at the game above the first-base dugout, as a show of friendship across the aisle.

On Thursday night, after the latest surgery, the hospital announced that Scalise had "improved in the last 24 hours".

If Scalise did not suffer nerve damage and his recovery continues without any complications, "it is possible that within three months or so, he can.be back on his feet", said Dr. Alex Jahangir, an orthopedic trauma surgeon at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, who was not involved in Scalise's care. "You have to do it with some action".
