Casey rides rollercoaster up US Open leaderboard

After the Travelers, McIlroy will take a week off and then play in the Irish Open, the Scottish Open and the British Open in consecutive weeks. "Mistakes got exaggerated a little bit more".

Fears Rickie Fowler could run away with the lead never materialised with the American falling back into the pack with a one over par 73 to now be sharing fifth place at six under. It was 1 over at Medinah in 1990.

At one time seven players were tied for the lead at seven-under and then again at eight-under with nobody able to gain separation until Thomas ripped a mighty three-wood second shot and then drained his eight-foot eagle putt at 18 sparking thundering roars from the massive gallery.

Big-hitters flop: Fowler leads by one shot from England's Paul Casey and lowly-ranked American Xander Schauffele.

T1. Brian Harman (-7): Like Koepka, Harman wasn't flashy today - he shot just 2-under par - but remains in the mix after turning in a respectable 70. He rebounded nicely with only one bogey and five birdies after his snowman on No. 14.

"You know, this is a golf course, that I really like this golf course", Johnson said. Garcia carded an eagle, three birdies and three bogeys in a roller coaster round. "And I feel like once the cannon gets open, I'll start pouring them in".

"If you look at the golf course and you even talk to me, Jason or Rory, this course sets up flawless for us", Johnson said.

Fleetwood loved the way he salvaged a bogey from the mess he was making at the last hole of the day. "I was out of it. trying to stay out of the way of Rory".

Eight of the top 12 players in the world won't be around for the weekend at Erin Hills, leaving a tournament as open as the land on which it was built.

Reed, who beat Rory McIlroy in the first singles contest at Hazeltine past year and was wearing the pants from his Ryder Cup uniform, said: "You always can take that fire from Ryder Cup and use it in other events". He birdied four of his last six holes - he missed two birdie putts of 10 feet and two-putted for birdie on the par-5 seventh - to rally for a 71. That still didn't appear to be almost enough. "And some of the weaknesses and flaws that are in my game at the minute showed up over the last couple of days".

"It's going to be great", said Fleetwood, a 26-year-old Englishman who won at Abu Dhabi on the European Tour earlier this year. McIlroy is headed for the Travelers Championship next week in CT, and he has three straight tournaments starting with the Irish Open through the British Open.

Under clear skies and warm sunshine, the Erin Hills course still offered plenty of encouragement after a day of record low-scoring on Thursday.

"I'm definitely disappointed I'm not playing the weekend, but there is a lot I can take out of it. We all play golf, and it's Father's Day weekend, so we thought it would be fun to get out here for a day", Lexi Jonas said.
