A sign in the crowd proclaimed "ONE FAMILY" and the announcer's mention of Mr Scalise, the House majority whip who was critically wounded in the attack, brought the masses to their feet.

Mr Scalise was shot in the hip when a lone gunman descended on the baseball practice in a Washington, DC suburb on Wednesday.

The bullet entered Scalise's left hip and tore across his pelvis, cracking bones and injuring organs and blood vessels.

Doctors at MedStar Washington Hospital, where Rep. Scalise is being treated, discussed his condition on Friday saying that they believed he would be in the hospital for a considerable amount of time, possibly weeks.

Speaking today from the White House, President Trump said Scalise's condition- initially announced as "stable" - was "much more hard that people even thought at the time". Yet, his status remains critical and he requires additional operations.

"So we have no intention to try to remove all the bullet fragments at this point".

He was considered in "imminent risk of death" when he arrived at the hospital after the shooting, the hospital's director of trauma, Dr. Jack Sava, said Friday.

The crowd started clapping and chanting United States of America after the first pitch was thrown by injured Capitol Police Officer David Bailey, one of the two officers on the congressman's security detail who've been credited with saving his life and potentially many others.

"This game is always an important moment for both parties to come together to support charity, build friendships, and celebrate our national pastime, but, as you all know, tonight's game has taken on a much deeper level of meaning, beyond anything that we would have thought", he said. Investigators are also looking through Hodgkinson's social media posts and profiles.

"The major initial risk to life is because of the hemorrhage", which doctors now have under control, Sava said.

Although the weather in Washington looks headed toward a near-flawless summer night, an obvious and immovable shadow is being cast over Thursday night's Congressional Baseball Game - a tradition that began more than a century ago.

James T. Hodgkinson, 66, allegedly opened fire on a Congressional baseball team as Republicans were practicing for an annual game to be played at Nationals Park Thursday.

Scalise was fielding ground balls at second base Wednesday when he was shot at a practice for the annual Republicans-Democrats baseball game. Ivanka Trump, joined by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and her two eldest children Arabella and Joseph Kushner, presented a $50,000 check from "Friends in the Trump Administration" to "Congressional Sports for Charity" at the game. "I'm glad we're here", Torre said.
