Erica Hamilton, an emergency medical technician from North Andover, helped Ranagan bring the body ashore.

The Essex County district attorney's office says the body found on Salisbury Beach on Monday morning has been identified as 44-year-old Chhoeun Chhoun, of Lowell, Massachusetts.

According to the Newburyport Daily News, Joseph Ranagan, a lifeguard from Haverhill, was playing football on the shore when he spotted the body in the water.

Ranagan noted that the body appeared to have been in the water for a while.

Authorities said Chhoun and Pen Sok, also of Lowell, set out in their boat on the afternoon of June 6. One person made it to safety, but the second person vanished after a wave of eight to 10 feet in height washed through the area, the Coast Guard said last week.

Coast Guard personnel aboard their 47-foot vessel were able to throw a buoy to Chhoun but he was unable to hang on to it.

That launched a massive rescue effort as police officers raced down the jetty on foot, and saw both men clinging to the wrecked boat, then watched as a wave came and took Chhoun away.

Salisbury police Detective Keith Forget said it was too early to determine whether the body was of Chhoun.
