Wrong to comment against Army chief: Rahul rebukes Dikshit

A day after the Congress leader and son of the former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Diskhit, Sandeep Dikshit called the Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat "Sadak Ka Goonda (goon on the street)", the BJP on Monday demanded an apology from the Congress President Sonia Gandhi. "This is absolutely wrong", he said, addressing a Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee meeting in Bengaluru.

"Ours is not a mafia Army like Pakistani army which makes statements like goons on the street".

Asserting that Dikshit's comments have insulted "15 lakh soldiers of the army", Manoj Tiwari said that his comment reflects "Rahul and Sonia Gandhi's" point of view as well.

"I think Sandeep Dikshit has already apologised for the comment he made".

"I wonder if this is a strategy of the Congress party, to undermine the Indian Army, weaken our institutions, which is what they do in Parliament also, you see them with sometime such sheer impunity". It looks bad when our Army chief gives a statement like a "sadak ka goonda", Dikshit had said.

This is published unedited from the IANS feed.

"It shocks us. It did not come from somebody from Congress, but from a very eminent Congress leader", Union Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in New Delhi. If I had to say something of this kind, there was a different language and manner in which I should have said it.

He added, "We see a trend of Congress leaders speaking against the Indian Army and the army chief". I thought Indian Army chiefs normally don't make these statements and they have a different manner in which they approach. He had, however, offered an apology but the BJP refused to buy it, demanding strict action against the former MP. Dikshit's comments have backfired on him and seems to have hurt the party as well. He later put out a tweet on his official-but-unverified page, saying: "I have reservations on a comment of the Army Chief, but I should have chosen appropriate words". That comment was made in a specific context and the matter should end there. They have questioned army's integrity.
