Lewis Hamilton was beaming after securing his easiest win of the 2017 season in Canada this weekend.

"It is kind of insane to think I had my first pole position and grand prix win here 10 years ago", Hamilton added.

When he looked in his mirror, the news got even better.

"It has been an incredible weekend, I couldn't be happier", Hamilton said. "Seeing the Ferrari further back, I thought, 'That's fantastic for us'".

Vettel suffered damage to his auto when being overtaken by Red Bull's Max Verstappen at the first corner and pitted for repairs four laps later, but he refused to blame the Dutch youngster.

Not feeling the damage at slow speed during the caution, Vettel waited to replace the wing until Lap 5 and fell to the back of the pack.

While Mercedes quickly rediscovered their mojo, they will need to keep it with Vettel leading Hamilton in the drivers' championship by 12 points.

"We'll try to get both cars on the podium soon". This win comes just weeks after Ferrari's triumph at Monaco where they had finished in first and second.

"The auto is back to where it should be", Hamilton said. Doesn't mean it'll be like that every time. "But we learned a lot".

"It's a long race when you're out there on your own", he said.

Red Bull driver Ricciardo, who qualified sixth fastest, had a tough race as he was forced to fend off the challenge of Force India drivers Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon over the last 15 laps.

Ocon responded on his way in: "He can not do that".

"My first points! It is special".

The Star Trek actor was interviewing the smiling Australian before Ricciardo said "I have to do something". "When everyone is there and everyone is happy it feels good, especially at home". I enjoyed it, it was fun, it was good racing.

That gave his team something to cheer after young Dutchman Max Verstappen had his race come to a premature end with mechanical problems while running second and challenging Hamilton for the lead. The pit stop to fix the damage left the Ferrari at the back of the field just six laps in.

A glitch for Raikkonen promoted Vettel to sixth, before he took fifth position after Ocon ran off the road at Turn One with four laps remaining. He came within 1 second of Ricciardo and a spot on the podium but settled for fourth.

"Nevertheless I feel the vehicle is very good, I was really happy this morning, I was happy this afternoon and it should be very good in the race so I'm looking forward to tomorrow". "They were untouched; they could control the race".

The team's issues didn't stop there though, with Kimi Raikkonen experiencing brake issues on his vehicle towards the end of the race. The pace was there and the vehicle deserved to finish higher up'.

The safety vehicle was deployed to deal with Sainz's stricken Toro Rosso, with Hamilton leading from Verstappen and Bottas. I didn't notice anything of me touching Vettel, but well, things like that can happen.

The same could not be said for his rival Vettel. Sainz thudded into the wall at Turn Three, while Massa was also out of the race.

Verstappen lasted just 20 laps despite jumping from fourth to second at the start.
