Police seized 60 assault rifles hidden in a cargo container at the Rio de Janeiro worldwide airport, authorities said. Authorities say the sixty rifles came from Miami (U.S.) in containers with swimming pool heaters, and are estimated at more than R$4 million.

The weapons, which were found at the cargo terminal at Rio de Janeiro's Galeao International Airport by the Specialized Police in Arms, Ammunition and Explosives and the Police Department of Theft and Burglary of Loads, include 45 AK-47 guns, 14 AR15's and one G3 rifle.

The seizure was made possible thanks to a year-long investigation and information obtained from court-ordered wiretaps of telephone calls.

Rio State Security Secretary Roberto Sa said 250 automatic rifles in all have been confiscated the last five months in the state.

The probe unveiled a massive global scheme to buy military grade firearms, investigators said.

Fabricio Oliveira, the head of the Brazilian Bureau of Firearms and Explosives, said the sizable seizure will be helpful in beginning to eliminate the worldwide scheme to buy military firearms. "Some details of the investigation are being kept confidential, as the investigations continue".

Police officials said in a news conference they planned to use the seized weapons because the state government is struggling with its budget.
