Specially trained officers are now negotiating with the knifeman, who is known to staff at the centre, according to Chronicle Live.

Specialist negotiators were called to the scene at the Jobcentre Plus in the Byker area of Newcastle.

Armed cops swarmed around Byker area of the city this morning after the man raced into the building at around 8am. As they rushed to the spot, police officers learned about a knifeman inside the premises. Six members of staff were reportedly held inside, and five have been released while one man remains inside, British media reports. "Several other staff members have left", police said.

This is a developing story. Northumbria Police say they believe all hostages have now been released.

Northumbria Police are keen to let people know this isn't thought to be terror related.

Police cordons were put in place, some surrounding roads were closed and Byker Metro station was also shut down as a precaution.
