Tucker: Why Did Comey Treat Trump & Clinton Differently?

Tucker said Comey has been inconsistent by making untrue statements that echoed the Clinton campaign's talking points, and then refusing to publicly say the truth about President Donald Trump not being under FBI investigation related to the Russian Federation probe. Meyers found it incredibly amusing to see people like House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) defending Trump and his interactions with Comey, saying "he's new at this" and didn't know better than to have one-on-one meetings.

Though Republicans worked to discredit Comey and to blunt the impact of his testimony, the ex-director's statement deepened questions about the basis for his May 9 dismissal and about whether Trump's actions constituted obstruction of justice.

Comey testified that after he was sacked, he gave copies of the memos he wrote about his meetings with Trump to "a friend of mine to share" with reporters.

Marc Kasowitz said Mr Trump never sought to impede the investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

"I was honestly concerned that he might lie about the nature of our meeting, so I thought it really important to document", he said.

But Comey already suspected Sessions would recuse himself, for reasons he said he couldn't discuss in an open hearing, weeks before The Washington Post uncovered Sessions' meetings with Kislyak. He also said it was significant that Trump told other officials in the Oval Office to leave before saying to Comey that Flynn "was a good guy", and asking him to "let this go". "Donald Trump Jr, one of Trump's three sons, praised Senator Marco Rubio who asked Comey the only thing "that's never been leaked is the fact that "@POTUS was not personally under investigation". Comey testified he wrote detailed memos of his meetings with Trump because he feared the president would lie.

The president's skilled tormentor James Comey did say Thursday that the president was not the subject of an FBI investigation.

During a discussion of the Hillary Clinton email investigation, Comey disclosed that then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch, an Obama administration appointee, instructed him to refer to the issue as a "matter", not an "investigation".

"I think Senator Burr, leading the way, and making sure we properly frame what this is and is not, I think is critical", said Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., chair of the conservative House Freedom Caucus.

"It's my judgment that I was sacked because of the Russian Federation investigation". It may not be as worrisome to some as the potential of Russian collusion with a U.S. campaign, but Comey, again, made clear Thursday that it was a problem.

"I should not be involved in investigating a campaign I had a role in", Sessions said. Wittes says he did not speak to the Times at Comey's behest, but Wittes' description of the March 27 lunch made it clear that Comey had concerns about Trump in real time, and not just in the wake of his firing.

As NPR's Scott Horsley reports, the lawyer also accused Comey of misstating the timing of the leak. The statement which was meant as an opening statement of Comey during his Congressional hearing today was released ahead by the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

Comey confirmed that when Michael Flynn was sacked as national security adviser on February 13, the retired lieutenant general was under criminal investigation for statements in connection with Russian contacts and for the contacts themselves.

But at least one committee source said they were confident, after listening to Comey's testimony, that they would find a way to get Comey's memos and work side-by-side with Mueller's probe.
