During a press conference addressing the controversy that has been following her ever since she posed for that infamous photo of her holding what looks like the bloody, severed head of Donald Trump, Kathy Griffin broke down in tears and claimed that Trump "broke me".

"I don't think I will have a career" after this, Griffin said, adding that she has had five performances cancelled this week.

An insider close to Griffin said she was disgusted by Cooper's statement and explained: "Kathy totally misjudged this".

"I've had everybody turn on me and I just want to make people laugh".

"I'm not afraid of Trump", she said. "I make mistakes. I'm an out-there comedian".

Griffin admits that her brand of shock-comedy does not meet everyone's taste, but she said she believes backlash against her photo is rooted, in part, in sexism.

"Trust me, if I could redo the whole thing, I'd have a blow up doll and no ketchup", continuing, "What's happening to me has never happened in the history of this great country, which is a sitting president of the United States and his grown children and the First Lady are personally, I feel, personally trying to ruin my life forever". "You're assuming that everything that Trump says is true, and in fact, we know that everything Trump says is false", she said.

Trump tweeted that the photo was "disgusting but not surprising" and said it represented "the left today".

Other shows in California, New Jersey and New Mexico have also been scrapped, while the Trump stunt has also cost the comic endorsement deals and her role as the co-host of CNN's annual New Year's Eve telecast.

Bloom also reported that Griffin had been contacted by the Secret Service, though that is standard procedure in matters like this.

The comic has received death threats, despite apologising for her actions.

"Probably [Demi] Lovato", she said in a tweet, wherein she called the former Disney Channel star "Debbie".
