In announcing the nation's withdrawal from the accord Thursday, Trump argued that the climate agreement negotiated under President Barack Obama was unfair to USA workers.

The rejection of the agreement has of course been met with rebukes from other world leaders and climate change experts. While devastating to climate activists and to the spirit of global cooperation in general, this move doesn't have to stop the rest of the world-including India-from moving forward on climate goals.

The Paris Agreement's central aim is to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping the global temperature rise in this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5 degrees Celsius. California, New York and Washington together account for about 10 percent of the country's greenhouse gas emissions, California Gov.

"We don't need the federal government throwing in [billions of dollars] a year and redistributing it through an worldwide octopus, to keep San Diego going down a green road." one commenter said.

The minister said that climate change is a priority for Estonia during the upcoming European Union presidency.

The tweet includes a now-popular hashtag "Make Our Planet Great Again" - a cheeky adaptation of the nationalist slogan used by Trump on his election campaign trail, "Make America Great Again".

Later on, President Trump spoke to several world leaders on the phone to explain the rationale behind his decision to exit the Paris climate agreement, said the White House, without divulging the names of the leaders.

Trump is stuck on China and India in particular.

It found that seven in 10 registered voters (69 per cent) said the United States should participate in the agreement, compared with only 13 per cent who said the USA should not. Already, renewable energy investments like the one at Green Port Hull are employing thousands of people, and export markets are growing.

The Democratic governors of Rhode Island and CT also announced Friday that they would join the state climate alliance.

On June 1, President Donald Trump announced that the USA will exit the Paris Agreement on climate change.

But the Paris agreement is not as polarising as other climate change issues, and a recent poll by Yale University found that nearly half of Mr Trump's supporters think the United States should take part in the agreement.

"I made the U.K.'s position clear to President Trump last week at the G-7 meeting, as did the other G-7 leaders, and I made the position clear to President Trump last night".

Under the Paris accord, the US sent some $1 billion to the Green Climate Fund that is guided by the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change - the body that coordinates worldwide climate policy. China now has the opportunity to fill this role as well.
