Mystery ensues after federal prosecutor found dead in Florida

Authorities believe Whisenant died as a result of a possible gunshot wound to the head or other type of trauma.

Hollywood police have identified the man found dead Wednesday morning near the beach as Beranton Whisenant, an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida.

Beranton Whisenant had started working for the U.S. Attorney's Office in January before being found dead Wednesday.

. According to police, Whisenant was very well dressed when he was found, wearing a business shirt and black trousers.

Whisenant's body was found by a passerby who saw him in the water. The office declined to comment on the investigation. "All of his personal effects were on him and that's what we found unusual". At this time, no arrests have been made. He was a wonderful lawyer and great colleague.

Whisenant worked for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Miami in its major crimes unit and the following statement was released: "The U.S. Attorney's Office family is deeply saddened by his death. Our thoughts are with his family and friends". He also taught a paralegal program at the University of Miami.

Michael Feiler, a local lawyer says he knew Whisenant, told the Miami Herald, that "he was the epitome of a gentleman and possessed an exceptional legal mind".
