The bomber in the Manchester terrorist attack appeared to have carried a powerful explosive in a lightweight metal container concealed either within a black vest or a blue Karrimor backpack, and may have held a small switch in his left hand, according to preliminary information gathered by British authorities.

Ramadan Abedi said the last time he spoke to Salman was five days ago as he was getting ready for a trip to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah, a smaller pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca.

Islamic State, now being driven from territories in Syria and Iraq by Western-backed armed forces, claimed responsibility for the attack.

"The brother was aware of all the details of the terrorist attack", the statement said.

A sixth person, a woman, was arrested by police in Blackley, an area north of Manchester city centre.

Abedi was named by British police Tuesday, a day after the attack outside a concert by USA pop star Ariana Grande.

Bomb disposal technicians who reviewed the images for The New York Times said that a more thorough analysis of the device was hard without more information, and that assessments of the bomb could change as authorities analyse it further and if they collect more evidence.

"We need to understand the whole network and how they acquired and built the bomb that exploded on Monday night". Of the 59 wounded, many were children under 16.

Nearly 1,000 military personnel were being deployed around the country, including to key sites such as Parliament, Buckingham Palace and Downing Street, after the official terror threat assessment was raised to critical, the highest level, indicating that a further attack may be imminent. The changing of the guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace was cancelled so police officers could be re-deployed.

In a news conference, Greater Manchester Police Chief Constable Ian Hopkins said that four other people had been arrested in connection with the attack at Manchester Arena. They also carried out searches at two addresses. In addition, officials in Libya said they arrested another brother, Hashem Abedi, and their father, Ramadan Abedi. Some news reports indicated that security forces were on the hunt for a second device made by Abedi, which may now be with a member of this network.

El-Khayat said: "If we are radicalizing people, who god-forbidden, have any intention to do (harm), the police will be the first to know". The UK later confirmed his identity.

It also emerged that Abedi had known links to Isis and had travelled to Syria before returning to the United Kingdom, according to France's interior minister.

In 2011, Abedi returned to Libya during the mass uprising that descended into a civil war and ended with Gaddafi's ouster and death. Salman and one brother stayed in the U.K.to finish their studies. And Kelly Brewster, her friends said she died saving a young life, throwing her body on her niece as the bomb exploded.
