People were seen running from the area near the large shopping area in the centre of the city.

There was heavy security presence in and around the shopping centre.

The Arndale, which contains hundreds of shops, would have already been on high alert following the deadly blast that killed 22 people at the Manchester Arena last night.

Despite the nervousness, police are now saying they have arrested a man at the Arndale center and believe the incident is unconnected to last night's bombing.

The Manchester Evening News said the incident was unrelated to the bomb attack at Manchester Arena on Monday evening that killed 22 and injured a further 59 people.

May said that the U.K. Police "believes they know identity of Manchester attacker, but at this stage of investigation we can't confirm his name".

Video tweeted shortly after 6 a.m. local time showed people fleeing the Manchester Arndale shopping center, and a detained man, apparently in handcuffs, being walked away. It is not known whether there is any connection with the attack.
