Following news last week that North Korea's missile defense program was developing faster than expected, leader Kim Jong Un ordered mass production of a medium-range ballistic missile with the ability to reach USA bases in the area Monday.

It also claimed the military has now increased its air surveillance, according to AP. It said South Korea was analyzing whether a North Korean military drone had crossed the border.

Under UN resolutions North Korea is barred from developing nuclear and ballistic missile technology.

The North has made no secret of its plans to develop a nuclear-tipped missile capable of striking the United States and has ignored calls to halt its weapons programmes.

Its state media, meanwhile, have stepped up their calls for even more missile launches because of what the government says is an increasingly hostile policy from President Trump.

There was no immediate comment in North Korea's state-run media, and no reports that the North had returned fire.

"Juche", in this usage, refers to domestically produced and DPRK is short for the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

"First and foremost it is important to implement the Security Council resolutions in a comprehensive way", Liu said.

The United Nations Security Council said on Monday it would impose additional sanctions on North Korea in response, accusing the country of "destabilizing behavior and flagrant and provocative defiance". Council member states held an emergency session at the United Nations headquarters in NY on Tuesday to discuss the North's ballistic missile test on Sunday.

The council statement said North Korea's "illegal ballistic missile activities are significantly contributing to its development of nuclear weapons delivery systems and are greatly increasing tension in the region and beyond".

A day after firing dozens of rounds at a flying object crossing the border from North Korea, South Korea's military said Wednesday it was apparently a balloon carrying propaganda leaflets.

Experts said that rocket flew higher and for a longer time than any other missile previously tested by North Korea and represents another big advance toward a viable ICBM.

The US-drafted Security Council statement was agreed on the eve of an emergency meeting requested by the United States, Japan and South Korea to discuss a course of action on North Korea.

He noted the Pukguksong-2's solid fuel is of particular concern.
