Hayden, from Owensboro, Kentucky, passed away May 22 from injuries suffered when he was struck by a vehicle while cycling May 17 in Rimini, Italy, where he was preparing for the next round of the World Superbike Championship.

Wednesday afternoon, Nicky Hayden, 35, was riding a bicycle on the road between Tavoleto and Riccione, south of the seaside resort of Rimini, when he was hit by a auto in unclearized circumstances.

A hospital statement issued on Thursday said Hayden had suffered "a serious polytrauma", which is a medical term to describe the condition of a person who has multiple traumatic injuries.

Authorities are investigating the crash and the driver who hit Hayden. He was training on the Rimini coast following a motorcycle race at nearby Imola.

They said the images suggested Hayden had failed to stop at an intersection and was hit full on by the passing auto.

Nicky's MotoGP career spanned from 2003 - 2016, competing with both the Honda and Ducati teams. He edged out Valentino Rossi in his Honda bike in his only Championship win ending the Italian's streak of five consecutive titles.

Hayden last raced in the MotoGP championship in Spain in September 2016 as a stand-in for injured Australian Jack Miller at the privately-run Marc VDS Honda team. The following year, Honda signed Hayden to the factory racing team.

"Nothing says more about Nicky's character than the overwhelming response expressed by fellow racers and his legions of fans over the past few days".

"I'm shattered after the news".

Nicknamed The Kentucky Kid, Hayden is the last American to win the MotoGP title.

Several family members had flown in from the United States, including Hayden's mother and brother.

Tommy Hayden thanked fans for the support. He went on to become the youngest AMA Superbike champion ever in 2002. Unfortunately, another homecoming celebration at this year's event on July 7-9 was cut short by the tragic accident.
