Search efforts began around 5:30 p.m. Saturday near the Pittsburg Marina, which is located on the Broad Slough and the Sacramento River Channel, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said.

Upon their arrival, authorities learned a 52-year-old Fairfield man jumped into the river to rescue his son, who fell out of a boat without a life jacket on.

Little is known about the circumstances that led up to the boaters falling into the water.

Crews from various agencies combed the water for several hours Saturday night before temporarily calling the search off due to darkness.

The father and son, along with at least one other man, were riding in a boat when the son somehow went overboard, according to Amy Nguyen, the missing man's niece.

The Sacramento Sheriff's Marine Enforcement Detail resumed the search early Sunday morning.

The father and son, along with their family, were enjoying a fishing trip before the incident. The 9-year-old child was rescued and taken to the hospital with hypothermia.

No further details were made available about the identities of those on board.
