Penn State men's golf advances to NCAA championships

Miller won by three strokes over three golfers at 4-under-par 209: Sean Crocker and Justin Suh of the University of Southern California, and Ian Holt of Kent State.

Golfers fought through rain, winds chills in the 30s and wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour on Friday, as no one in the elite field finished under par.

The sophomore survived the final round of the NCAA West Lafayette Regional Wednesday, battling 30 mile per hour winds, to shoot a 79 (37-42) and finish with a 1-over-par 217 (68-70-79) at the par-72, 7,411-yard Kampen Course on the campus of Purdue.

Also advancing out of the Regional is defending national champion Oregon. Four rounds of stroke play will whittle the field to eight for match play. But the final round in IN will be know for one top-ranked school holding their own while another faded.

The score of 80 is Pagdanganan's second-best round in her four rounds at the NCAA Championships dating back to previous year. "This was unique because we were treading water for a day-and-a-half and struggling". "The conditions were brutal and it's a hard golf course".

That was enough to get them to the finals because the top five qualified. "It feels great that we persevered through a sluggish day-and-a-half".

The Lobos, who started the final round of the West Lafayette Regional in the lead, fell all the way to fourth place in the team standings Wednesday.

Junior standout Nick Hardy earned co-medalist honors, and led the team in scoring with a 3-under par total of 213.

Ranked fourth in the country by Golfstat, Stanford didn't necessarily need a home-course advantage to qualify for nationals, but it didn't hurt. Seiple finished 4-over on the tournament and tied for 25th.

Joining them at the top of the leader board was Baylor. Brad Dalke (OU) produced the individual title with -12 (198).

Top-ranked USC claimed the regional title with a 3-under par 849. "I have said it before, but this team has consistently displayed a resilience and fight all year". "A top-10 finish in this field is one heck of an accomplishment".

This will mark the fifth time under Nye that the Lions have appeared in the NCAA Championship with appearances in 1996, 2004, 2008 and 2010 with their best finish in 2004 (15th).
