Fox News patriarch Roger Ailes has died at 77, the network reported Thursday morning.

Ailes, she said, "was a loving husband to me, to his son Zachary, and a loyal friend to many".

Judith and I extend our condolences, love and prayers to Beth, Zachary and all of Roger's family, including his Fox family.

The controversy really gained steam in July 2016, when Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson filed a lawsuit against Ailes alleging sexual harassment and wrongful termination.

He was also a longtime friend of President Trump, who defended Ailes against the accusations of sexual harassment, saying Ailes had helped "some of the women that are complaining".

Under Mr Ailes' leadership, Fox became US' most widely watched cable news channel, home to key conservative political commentators, and drew an audience distinct from rivals CNN and MSNBC.

Former President George H.W. Bush paid tribute to Roger Ailes in a tweet Thursday that credited the Fox News founder for helping him win the White House in 1988.

According to some media personalities, former Fox News Chief Roger Ailes is responsible for the rise of President Donald Trump.

As an aide to President Richard Nixon in 1970, he prepared a 300-page memo titled, "A Plan for Putting the GOP on TV News".

"For better or worse & the ignominious end 2 his reign at Fox News, the impact of Roger Ailes on American politics & media was indisputable", he tweeted.

"Today America lost one of its great patriotic warriors", he said in a statement read on the channel.

At least six other women have come forward with allegations against Ailes and top Fox News executives.

In 1996 he helped launch Fox News, which would dramatically change the media landscape.

"Roger and I shared a big idea which he executed in a way no one else could have", he added. "Roger was a patriot, who never ceased fighting for his beliefs".

Fox News promoted Republican candidates and causes and relentlessly attacked what it perceived to be liberal bias in the mainstream media and the entertainment industry. Ailes found a way to make a network that catered to half the country in an aging demographic that was passionate about the news, and most importantly, were conservatives at heart. Ailes worked as an adviser to the presidential hopeful at the time.

After he resigned from Fox News, Ailes reportedly returned to politics.
