The team also is closing in on a minor league deal with free-agent first baseman James Loney, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney.

Freeman will wear a cast for four weeks.

Jace Peterson will start at first base Thursday night against the Toronto Blue Jays and bat sixth. "He just threw one that got away". The Braves hoped offseason addition Sean Rodriguez would have been the fill-in for Freeman this season, but Rodriguez may miss the full season with a shoulder injury sustained when a vehicle he was driving was rammed by a stolen police auto in Miami on January 28. "Obviously it's a tough blow".

"He was just trying to get me out", Freeman said. The injury isn't expected to require surgery, which is good news, but it will still keep him sidelined for an extended period of time. Loney, 33, hit.265 with nine homers in 100 games for the Mets previous year and was released from a minor league contract with Detroit this month.

The Braves were left without a true backup for Freeman when Sean Rodriguez was lost for the season because of a serious shoulder injury suffered in an auto crash over the winter.

Coppolella said re-signing Ryan Howard, who was released from Gwinnett on May 8, was not an option.

Donaldson, who is on the disabled list with a strained left calf, then immediately added his own tweet: "Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha".

Washington left-hander Gio Gonzalez (3-1, 2.47 ERA) will face Braves knuckleballer R.A. Dickey (3-3, 4.22 ERA) on Friday. He still managed a game-tying base hit on the next pitch.

"It was a bad couple of days", Nationals manager Dusty Baker said in Pittsburgh. We made a lot of mistakes. "We just have to up the intensity and up our concentration".
