Music fans across the country mourned the loss Thursday of Chris Cornell, but his death was felt particularly acutely in Seattle, where he grew up and formed Soundgarden in the 1980s.

Soundgarden was a well-known rock band in the 1990s. He was just 52 years old.

Rolling Stone said Cornell exhorted the sold-out crowd on Wednesday night (Thursday New Zealand time) to act as backing vocalists.

Writing on Twitter, Jimmy said: "RIP Chris Cornell Incredibly Talented Incredibly Young Incredibly Missed".

The music world woke up today to the tragic news that Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell died following a show in Detroit. He was 52. Soundgarden was the scheduled headliner for Pointfest on Saturday in Maryland Heights, Missouri. Chris Cornell from Soundgarden, he died.

The group hit its commercial peak with its breakout album, "Superunknown", in 1994, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for best rock album. Their most popular songs, "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman", both won Grammys.

In 2001, he joined Audioslave, a supergroup that included former Rage Against the Machine members Tom Morello, Brad Wilk and Tim Commerford. The band released their first single "Hunted Down" on Subpop in 1987. What an incredible singer and musician we just lost.

Soundgarden - also comprised of Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron and Ben Shepherd - split in 1997 and reunited in 2010, with their last record being "King Animal" in 2012. As well as fronting incredibly successful and influential bands, he also released a number of solo albums.

Chris' wife Vicky Karayiannis reportedly became concerned after she failed to reach him after the concert, according to TMZ.

Around the time of his Timbaland produced album "Scream", Cornell covered the Michael Jackson song "Billie Jean" in an acoustic rendition that would garner him many accolades, and proved particularly powerful when Jackson died in June of 2009.
