"As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with flawless accuracy!" he tweeted.

When asked about his Friday morning tweet that Comey "better hope that there are no "tapes" of their conversations, Trump said, "Well, that I can't talk about".

Representative Adam Schiff (Democrat-California), a vocal critic of Trump, said in a tweet said that the president should release any tapes that might exist.

As has happened on previous occasions since Trump took office, different versions rapidly circulated of an event, in this case phone conversations between Comey and Trump and a dinner the pair had at the White House.

Trump is considering 11 people to replace Comey, a White House official said.

Spicer also pushed back on characterizations about the nature of the tweet saying it was "not a threat". "The tweet speaks for itself".

The press briefing marked the latest extraordinary moment in a drama that has gripped Washington since Mr. Comey's firing on Tuesday night.

In an interview with United States media, President Trump also accused him being a "showboat" and a "grandstander". According to the two anonymous sources cited in the story, Comey had replied that he could give Trump his "honesty".

Clint Watts, a former Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent, said on MSNBC that Trump's tweet threatening to leak conversations with Comey is causing government officials to say they can't trust the President's judgment. The president also threatened to cancel the century-old policy of daily White House press briefings if criticism of their accuracy continues.

"As a very active president with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with flawless accuracy!"

Spicer declined to say whether canceling briefings was a real possibility.

Trump, however, said it "wouldn't be a bad question to ask".

"If so, we request copies of all recordings in possession of the White House regarding this matter", they said.

During the interview, Trump claimed that he fired Comey because he was a show-off.

Blumenthal's call for an investigation also comes days after Trump blasted him on Twitter in response to the senator's comments on the dismissal of FBI Director James Comey, Blumenthal will be holding a news conference about the president's ouster of the former director.

Trump said the candidates were "outstanding people" and "very well known".

Senate Intel Committee Ranking Member Mark Warner said he's hoping to hear from Comey in the "not-to-distant future".

Trump went on to slam Democrats as "hypocrites" due to their previous condemnations of Comey and his handling of the FBI's investigation into Hillary Clinton's private email server.

"President Trump doesn't understand Watergate, he hasn't learned anything from it", he said. "Did he order Comey to end the investigation?"

During a Thursday interview with NBC's Lester Holt, Trump said he made the decision to fire Comey on his own, and that he would have done it regardless of what Rosenstein recommended, adding that he had been thinking of "this Russian Federation thing with Trump" when he came to his decision to fire Comey. A letter released by the President's lawyers publicly set out the Russian transactions reported on Mr Trump's tax returns for the first time.
