Despondent over the end of a relationship, a gunman entered the pool area of his San Diego apartment complex Sunday and began shooting indiscriminately at people gathered for a birthday party, authorities said.

During the attack - which officers said was likely motivated by a breakup- Selis killed one and injured seven others while simultaneously speaking with his ex-girlfriend on the phone, police said.

"These victims were just in his vicinity when he committed this awful tragedy", San Diego police Chief Shelley Zimmerman told the media.

Zimmerman said that all six of those wounded are expected to survive.

One of the witnesses who had been at the pool at the time the shooting began told local reporters that there had been a birthday party and although none of the guests seemed to recognize Selis, the birthday boy invited him to join the celebration.

Police responded in force, with 20 officers and a police helicopter arriving at the scene around seven minutes after being called to the scene.

She said family of Selis interviewed by police described him as "distraught and depressed" over a recent breakup, but "they had no idea he would resort to violence, let alone shooting at innocent victims".

"These victims were just in his vicinity when he committed this bad tragedy", police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said.

A day after the fatal mass shooting in San Diego Sunday, a Go Fund Me page was set up to raise money to cover the victims' medical expenses.

A childhood friend said he will miss the infectious smile of victim Monique Clark, who was devoted to her daughters, ages 2 to 13.

"He was on the lounge chair while he was shooting", Zimmerman said.

Assistant Chief Brian Ahearn says Peter Selis had briefly called his ex-girlfriend during the Sunday night shooting.

According to court records cited by the San Diego Union Tribune Selis was struggling with massive debt and a failing marriage when he filed for bankruptcy in late 2015. Zimmerman said Selis wanted his ex girlfriend to keep listening as he kept firing, perhaps in anticipation of his ultimate demise and death.

Three officers rushed in on foot and shot Selis after he pointed a large-caliber handgun at them, she said.

"What's important now is making sure that everybody is OK, Griffin said, "that young lady who unfortunately passed away, that her family is comforted".

A motive for the shooting has not been established, the police chief said. The pilot reported seeing multiple victims down and directed officers to Selis, who he said appeared to be reloading his weapon.

"I was shaking. I started crying", he said. I just picked him up and I just carried him. They returned fire, killing the gunman. According to reports, the man was holding a gun in one hand and a bottle of beer in another.
