Sean Spicer Wants You to Know That the Tweet Speaks for Itself

"The president needs to have unvarnished advice and counsel", the former official added.

"The tweet speaks for itself", White House press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters afterwards. I watched this symbiotic relationship influence Nixon's handling of Watergate four decades ago, and it is happening again.

Trump pushed back when Pirro suggested Spicer could be replaced, though the president did concede that the spokesman has faced difficulties.

Reps. John Conyers and Elijah Cummings also said 'Congress should immediately seek the testimony of Director Comey'.

Both he and deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders were put in a tough spot by Trump's own evolving story over the last few days, struggling to reconcile what they'd seemingly been told earlier (and Trump's own letter to Comey saying he'd taken the advice of the DOJ to fire him) with Trump's Wednesday comments.

First he gave an interview that essentially undercut all the arguments White House officials, from Vice-President Mike Pence on down, had made to paint the Comey sacking as an operation conducted through normal channels. Close associates of Mr. Comey have said that he didn't provide such assurances.

In sports terms, the strategy could be described as "flooding the zone" - launching a ferocious, full-out assault to overwhelm an opponent's defences.

Is it the details of the Comey-Trump dinner and the president's hints of secret "tapes"?

Trump's response was admitting inaccuracies - and threatening to cancel the White House daily briefing as a result. Lester Holt knew when to say nothing, and allowed Trump to hang himself. Mark Warner (D-VA) affirmed that it was, but said "he won't be testifying on Tuesday" as he was invited to do.

But it's also where sources close to Comey said Trump asked Comey to pledge his loyalty to him, which the Federal Bureau of Investigation director refused to do, instead promising only "honesty".

In brief remarks to a group of military mothers and spouses at a Mother's Day event, Trump got a round of applause when discussing proposed defense-spending increases. "Doing away with briefings would reduce accountability, transparency, and the opportunity for Americans to see that, in the United States system, no political figure is above being questioned", Jeff Mason, WHCA president said in a statement.

Trump told Fox News in an interview he did not think an independent probe was necessary.

But the president declined to say whether Spicer would continue in his position. "I've talked to the president".

"You have a level of hostility that's incredible and it's very unfair", said Trump.

As the Comey firing and the Russian Federation probe consumed cable news networks and the internet, the administration announced an agreement with China to promote market access for US natural gas, financial services and beef.
