A deadly mass shooting took place in San Diego University City apartment complex when a gunman started shooting at people.

Pictured, San Diego pool shooting suspect, Peter Raymond Selis who was struggling with heavy financial hardship and a failed relationship.

The victims were originally identified as four African American females with gunshot wounds, two African American males with gunshot wounds, one Hispanic male with gunshot wounds and one African American male with a broken arm sustained while fleeing the area.

A San Diego police official say the ex-girlfriend of man who opened fire at his apartment building's pool heard two gunshots when the gunman called her during the rampage.

"The victims were targeted for no reason other than their mere presence", police said.

Two students who were in a hot tub when Selis began shooting eventually escaped the area. "In his facial expression, no smiling, laughing, talking", Demetrius Griffin, a Seattle-area man who attended the party, told CNN. At that moment Selis pulled a gun from his waistband and began firing shots at people. "Even when he reloaded his magazine, he sat in his chair", said Griffin. He didn't say anything.

The man who opened fire was distraught over a recent break-up and called his ex-girlfriend as he fired round after round at his victims.

Gabrielle Sulli, who lives at the apartment complex, told KGTV she heard "people screaming" and said "there is a insane guy that is shooting, we made a decision to run ... we literally saw people jumping out from the fences and running away like insane". Witnesses said there were about 30 people at the pool.

When police arrived, they fatally shot the gunman, Peter Selis, who was on the phone with his ex-girlfriend while he carried out the awful crime.

Despite a witness claim that shooter Peter Selis deliberately spared a white attendee at the pool gathering, San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman was adamant the crime was not racially motivated. One woman was killed and seven others were injured in the attack.

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said they received a call about a shooting in progress just after 6 p.m. on Sunday and multiple calls continued to come in as police were en route. "La Jolla is known to be really safe, and this is a family neighborhood".

Police released the information late Monday after previously saying all the victims were black or Latino.

Gabrielle Sulli, who lives at the apartment complex, told KGTV she heard people screaming. He said he ran into the clubhouse and saw two other people bloodied. There was just so much blood.

Chief Zimmerman said the police helicopter was the first responder to arrive on the scene.

Police fatally shot Selis.

Three officers on the ground shot the suspect after he pointed a large-calibre hand gun at them, Zimmerman said.

The witness said that ten minutes later, Selis started shooting at the group.
