A popular actor in the long-running South African drama series - Generations - has been killed by robbers in Johannesburg on Sunday night.

Police spokesperson Hitler Ngwenya says two people were killed during an attempted armed robbery last night.

"It happened at 23:00".

It's understood they had confronted four men who had robbed women of their cellphones when they were attacked. "The two victims who were shot were trying to assist the other people in the pub who were being robbed", Mgwenya told News24.

Hlatshwayo's passing was confirmed by Mpho Mhlongo, the Jozi FM CEO.

Arts and culture minister Nathi Mthethwa tweeted he was shocked at Hlatswayo's passing.

"Mandla Hlatshwayo was multitalented".

Hlatshwayo was also known for his role as Siphiwe Phosa on SABC1 soapie Generations, a role he played for seven years.
