The New York Times said Comey has told associates he declined to make a pledge of loyalty to Trump when the president requested it as the pair had dinner at the White House just seven days after his inauguration.

In a series of tweets, Mr Trump threatened Mr Comey and also warned that he may cancel all White House press briefings.

His latest flashpoint with media was over his press office's treatment of news of FBI Director James Comey's ouster. Which professional advisors would be willing to speak honestly with him if they thought they were being taped, and that Trump would later use that tape against them?

In a letter sent Friday to White House Counsel Donald McGahn, Reps.

During a press briefing, ABC's Jonathan Karl asked, "Isn't it true that the president had already chose to fire James Comey, and he asked the Justice Department to put together the rationale for that firing?"

The move to fire Comey drew comparisons to Nixon's so-called Saturday Night Massacre, when Nixon attempted, and eventually succeeded, to fire the man investigating him - much like Trump did with Comey. The White House initially said President Donald Trump made the call at the recommendation of the top two officials at the Justice Department, but in an NBC News interview that aired Thursday, the president said he would have fired Comey even without the recommendation.

Spicer also denied reports that Trump solicited a loyalty pledge from Comey during their dinner earlier this year. "It is done, and I will be fine, although I will miss you and the mission deeply", Comey wrote. "You know that, I know that, everyone knows that".

Andrew McCabe, testifying before Congress Tuesday in place of his fired boss, contradicted the administration's characterizations of an investigation into potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign to influence the presidential election.

On Twitter, Trump appeared to suggest that if Comey gave his version of contacts between them, the administration might produce tapes of conversations, although it was not clear if such tapes exist.

Even before Mr Trump's provocative tweet, the White House was scrambling to clarify why Mr Comey was sacked. "In fact, when I chose to just do it, I said to myself, I said, you know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story", Trump said.

In separate tweets Friday morning Trump seemed to hint at dissatisfaction with how his communications team has weathered the firestorm he created with the abrupt decision to fire Comey on Tuesday.

Press aides have repeatedly insisted that Mr Trump made a decision to dismiss Mr Comey on the advice of Rod Rosenstein, the USA deputy attorney general.

For the sake of the republic, you can hope for now that Trump is simply making another unfounded claim, as he has done so many times before.

Asked at Wednesday's White House news briefing whether loyalty was a factor in picking a new Federal Bureau of Investigation director, Sanders said Trump wanted someone who is "loyal to the justice system".
