Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said Monday that Ingmar Guandique, 35, was flown Friday to San Salvador and transferred to authorities in there.

ICE said they deported him because he was in the United States illegally and was a "documented MS-13 gang member" with a long criminal record.

"Mr. Guandique unlawfully entered the United States, and once here, continued to violate US laws by assaulting innocent victims", ICE Washington D.C. Field Director Matthew Munroe said in a statement.

While I was a reporter for the Washington Post, I had five law enforcement sources confirm that Condit told investigators that Levy had spent the night at his apartment in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of D.C.

At his 2010 trial, another inmate, Armando Morales, testified that Guandique confessed to him that he had killed Levy. The remains of her body were found a year later in Rock Creek Park in northwest D.C. A judge ordered the case dismissed in July at the request of prosecutors. "As a result of his actions, he has been removed to his home country of El Salvador".

The Levy case drew widespread attention and former California Congressman Gary Condit at one point came under scrutiny in her disappearance.

Years later, authorities charged Guandique in Levy's death.

Levy's skull was found on May 22, 2002, in Washington's Rock Creek Park, the same park where Guandique had assaulted the other two women.

Guandique was sentenced to 60 years, when he was 29.

Ingmar Guandique was convicted in Levy's death after a 2010 trial, but a judge overturned the case after the testimony of the key witness was called into question. Guandique's defense lawyers argued Morales' testimony was unreliable and that there was no physical evidence linking Guandique to the the murder.

In 2010, an Federal Bureau of Investigation biologist testified in Guandique's trial that Condit's semen was found in Levy's underwear. Last year, she said she was upset to hear Guandique would be released.

"I did not have a romantic involvement with her", Condit said.
