Comey recently began getting daily instead of weekly reports on the probe, according to the Journal, with the focus appearing to be on companies that have done business with Trump or that have some connection to him. Sanders cited Comey's July news conference which he held without notifying his superiors at the Justice Department. But Trump on Thursday acknowledged for the first time that the Russian Federation investigation - which he dismissed as a "made-up story" - was also on his mind as he ousted the man overseeing the probe.

But calling Comey a "showboat" and "grandstander", Trump completely threw away the sloppily crafted timeline spun by his administration.

The White House's reasoning seemed to shift as well.

But the acting director's contradiction of the White House version of events raises even more questions about the real reasons that Trump fired Comey.

"That is not accurate", McCabe told senators. Andrew McCabe, who has replaced Mr Comey as acting head of the FBI, assured U.S. senators the investigation would continue.

Mr Rosenstein reportedly made his threat unless the White House conveyed that the decision began with the president, according to United States media. The intelligence community has also concluded that Russian Federation was trying with its efforts to get Trump elected. Susan Collins, R-Maine, that it was not standard FBI practice to notify someone if they are not under investigation.

Leaders of the USA intelligence agencies, including Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and CIA chief Mike Pompeo, testified to the senators on Thursday that they agreed with that finding.

Warner and Burr left the hearing midway and met with Rob Rosenstein, the newly hired deputy attorney general who co-signed the White House memo firing Comey. Comey found the allegations confounding, according to his associate, and wondered what to make of what he described as odd thoughts coming from his new boss.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Wednesday that Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein came to Trump at a meeting on Monday with concerns about Comey.

"I don't want people to over-interpret this answer", said Comey.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer ended up briefing reporters about the move in the dark on Tuesday night near a patch of bushes steps away from the West Wing.

The president also denied that he had any business dealings or holdings in Russian Federation that might present a conflict of interest. Just a month ago, Trump publicly expressed his confidence in Comey.

McCabe also promised that if the White House tried to interfere in the bureau's work, he would alert the committee, and he said he would not offer any status updates about the matter to the president or those who work for him. A senior White House confirmed Rogers was under consideration. In the NBC interview, Trump doesn't try to deny it. "My decision", Mr Trump said.
