The Samsung boss went on trial in South Korea earlier today.

A year ago it had to pull its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones because their batteries were exploding. We already have evidence of the same in the form of previous quarterly reports, where these businesses contribute about 68 percent to the overall operating profit. On the other hand, the image also reveals an interesting information regarding the battery used with the refurbished model.

The company's stock is trading near historic highs, despite Lee's troubles and the scrapping past year of its flagship Galaxy Note 7 smartphone due to fire-prone batteries.

At its unveiling in NY last month, the large-screened Galaxy S8, which incorporates a native virtual assistant, won widespread praise.

Her close confidante Choi is also on trial for forcing top South Korean firms, including the tech giant, to "donate" almost US$70 million to non-profit foundations which she allegedly used for personal gain. Sales hit 50 trillion won, up 0.44 percent on year but down 6.24 percent on quarter, suggesting the world's largest chipmaker that is also a leader in smartphones and home appliances has done well in high-end products.

Samsung, in a regulatory filing, said its January-March profit was likely 9.9 trillion won ($8.76 billion), compared with an average forecast of 9.4 trillion won from a Thomson Reuters survey of 18 analysts.

Park indicted Lee in late February along with four other Samsung executives, but the 48-year-old heir was the only one to have been detained.

"As long as Lee is locked up, it won't be easy for Samsung to restore its reputation completely", Koo Chang-hwan, chief of the Korea Reputation Center, said before Friday's hearing began.

The strong guidance failed to shore up investor's confidence in the firm, however, as shares in Samsung fell nearly 1 percent in early trading.

Sales of OLED display panels for mobile devices will also remain strong, keeping Samsung's bottom line solid, they said.
