Vehicle racer Ashwin Sundar, wife killed in Chennai accident

Sending instant shock-waves across the racing industry in the country, reports emerged on Saturday morning that popular vehicle racer Ashwin Sundar and his wife Niveditha were charred to death after their BMW lost control, hit a tree and burst into flames in Pattinampakkam in Chennai.

The burning of the auto was streamed live on Facebook which instantly went viral on social media. Both Ashwin and his wife, a doctor at a private hospital in Chennai, died on the spot after their auto swerved out of control and crashed into a tree, catching fire. Soon, the BMW caught fire and the couple was charred to death. They struggled for around half-an-hour to put out the fire.

Police officials told The News Minute that the incident happened around 3:30am on Saturday and both Ashwin and his wife died on the spot.

A passerby, who witnessed the accident, informed the Chennai City Police after which a team of police personnel from Adyar rushed to the spot.

Fire and rescue services personnel from Mylapore also pressed into service. Nivedhitha was a doctor working at a private hospital here. They then sent the corpses to the Government Royapettah Hospital for postmortem examination. Initially, the police didn't identify the couple.

The accident occurred while the couple was returning home from a friend's place in Raja Annamalaipuram.
